Client: ASDA
Project: The Sustainable Food Industry Summit
ASDA asked us to work with the Institute of Grocery Distribution to arrange a one-day conference involving the key players in the food industry. They wanted to demonstrate their commitment to multi-stakeholder dialogue by sharing best practice and identifying ways in which the food industry could collaborate on sustainability.
We decided that if we were to generate meaningful discussions around the issues competing organisations could collaborate on, we would have to involve speakers who would draw senior industry figures. What’s more, breakout sessions would have to be closed to press and NGOs.
We also wanted to ensure that speakers would impress on delegates the importance of collaboration and the imperative for driving sustainability in the industry.

Having sourced the British Museum as the venue (and ensured the catering would be sustainable), we secured senior speakers from the Green Alliance (Stephen Hale – Chief Executive), Greenpeace (Blake Lee Harwood – campaigns director), Tetra Pak (Peter Knuttsson Managing Director), the president of the National Farmers Union (Peter Kendall) and The UK government’s Energy Minister Malcolm Wickes for an opening plenary which set the stage for the discussion. This was followed by industry breakout sessions on sustainable sourcing, transport, packaging and waste and carbon management during which organisations more used to competing with one another, agreed on areas in which they could collaborate.
By working with the IGD we were able to secure involvement from all the main Supermarkets alongside both global and local players in the food industry.
